The shock of the night

UNMANAGED NIGHTTIME DELAY
NO RESERVED SEAT
Interaction Saves the Experience

An Interrail trip that reminds us that in Europe, freedom of movement does not exclude risks or sleepless nights.

🌙 A quiet departure, a delayed arrival

This is the only overnight trip of the Summer Tour. Departure from Amsterdam at the end of the day, with the first two regional trains (operated by Dutch Railwaysfluid and comfortable.
But when it arrived at Bielefeld Central Station around 11:30 PM, everything gets complicated:

  • Progressive delay of the night train to Berlin
  • No services open after midnight (restaurants, restrooms, information).
  • No reserved seat, due to lack of an “overnight bunk” option.

Result: 3 hours waiting in an empty station, then 6 hours on the train unassigned seat, to take micro-naps in the hallway.
A significant memory, but also formative.

“Next time I have an overnight train, I'm booking a sleeper. Systematically.”

This ease of use, specific to the Interrail model, contributes greatly to the perceived serenity.

Companies used: Who runs the train?

The Amsterdam → Berlin route mobilize multiple interconnected operators, each making a specific contribution to the traveler experience:

  • NS International (a subsidiary of Dutch Railways) operates the Intercity service linking Amsterdam and Berlin in collaboration with Deutsche Bahn. With approximately 5 trains per day, this service offers a direct journey in under 6 hours, with an onboard bistro available on some trains.
  • The trains Intercity Berlin (Category IC/EC 77) offer structured connections via intermediate stations (Amersfoort, Hengelo, Osnabrück...), ensuring regular and punctual journeys.
  • Finally, European Sleeper, a Belgian-Dutch cooperative, has been offering a nighttime alternative since 2023: The Good Night Train, an Amsterdam–Berlin service operated three times a week, with bookable sleeping berths.

Thanks to these operators, the traveler benefits from a wide range of options to meet different needs—comfort, budget, flexibility.

Challenge, vision et performance en un seul regard

📊 Lecture OswegO: The Interrail customer experience under degraded conditions

This journey highlights two key dimensions of the traveler experience:

  1. Traveler resilience thanks to the flexibility of the Interrail Pass, regional connections were easy to adjust.
  2. System failure No clear information about the prolonged delay, absence of visible staff in the station, and inadequate infrastructure for transit passengers.

Fortunately, human interaction—here with other young Europeans met in the same situation—partially rebalanced the experience. As is often the case when traveling, The relationship saves what the system does not control in community mode.

SOLD in 2023 — a historic record for Interrail, proof of growing adherence among young Europeans to this mode of discovering the continent

🧠 What this trip says about European rail

Freedom of movement in Europe is real. The Interrail Pass it demonstrates it at every step.
But the customer experience, it, still depends too much on the time, place, and local operator.

“The traveler experience doesn't always cross borders as easily as trains.”

The technical optimization of journeys (tight connections, automated services, non-mandatory reservations) is not always aligned with the User feedback.
When everything goes well, Interrail is a promise kept. When it goes off the rails, the ecosystem remains fragile.

🚦Conclusion: A Difficult Night, A Lasting Lesson

The Amsterdam-Berlin journey was not comfortable. But it did allow us to get a glimpse of the reality of European infrastructure. outside of regular hours, and to think about the service promise that railway operators still need to strengthen.
This kind of experience creates discerning travelers who aren't just looking to travel, but to understand the system.

It is a discreet success, without spectacular effects, but which gives Confidence in rail as a mode of discovering Europe.
